RAFW: Beauty at Marnie Skillings Spring/Summer 2011-12

July 27th, 2011

The spring/summer 2011-12 collection from Marnie Skillings this season was a visual feast of colours, prints and patterns. While a fashion novice like me felt a little lost on where to look, there was always the comfort of a great hair do and perfect make-up to keep me focused.

The inspiration this season was all about adventurous, worldly girls. Feminine and soft, but still sexy and strong. Michelle Jank was one half of the styling team (the other being David Bonney) and it was amazing to see the detail and dedication she puts into a show. No model went on to the catwalk without every bit of make-up and hair getting Michelles tick of approval, it was amazing to see the woman in action.

Makeup at Marnie Skillings S/S 2011-12 by Napoleon Perdis

Skin: For the face it was all about subtilty and well sculpted features. A perfect complexion is a must for this look so Napoleon prepped skin with Complex Skin Renewal Serum and Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer. Any small blemishes or redness was covered with Pro Pallette Concealer and then covered with Camera Finish powder to set.

Brows: Left very natural with just a light brushing to look neat. No products were used.

Eyes: Lids were lightly covered in Color Disc Skinny Dip using a Sculpting Brush. This gave the eyes a fairly nude shimmer effect.

Cheeks: Amazingly all the contouring was created by using the Mighty Concealer Pen in two different colours. Coffee Cream was used as a blush and Mellow Yellow was used to highlight.

Lips: A thin application of Auto Pilot Lip Service in Original gave a natural, bare pout.

Body/Hands: To tie-in with the well travelled, eclectic style of the show, Napoleon Perdis was also recruited to create intricate henna-style hand art on every model. Plain decals were used as a base on which makeup artists used liquid liners to create the designs and then adorned them with jewels and studs. As you can see from the images, the work were intricate and stunning.

Nails at Marnie Skillings S/S 2011-12 by Blixz

Well manicured nails were a must for this show, seeing as though a lot of focus would be drawn to the unusual hand art. Blixz made sure the girls nails were up to scratch (HA, get it!) by applying a nude/taupe coloured foil to the fingers. The choice of colour was perfect as the focus remained on the hand art, but also matched the make-up and clothing.

Hair at Marnie Skillings  S/S 2011-12 by Shane Hedding for Goldwell

Goldwell Ambassador, Shane Hedding created a beautiful hair style that worked perfectly by itself or under some of Marnie’s large-brimmed animal print hats. An off-centre part was created, then all hair from the side sections and back were slicked into a french roll. The top section was curled with a curling wand and placed in hot rollers. Once cooled, the curls were brushed out to create fluffy soft waves.

Who wants to go fishing with him?

July 25th, 2011

No.617 in a limited series – This is you, the male Swide reader. No?

I can’t find any pricing information on your look, I can’t find anyinformation on your name. It has to be you, admit it. So let’s analyze your outfit together? You did quite a good job mixing and matching the whole Dolce&Gabbana collection.

The knitwear that looks like a shirt goes very well with the simple white tshirt inside. The jeans are not too skinny which is good because it’s almost summer and the last thing you want is to have is a strong fabric touching your skin.

You are a modern day gentleman so of course you will change your rather chic flip flops into elegant shoes at night. Yet I must admit that the sandals are a big thumbs up, it suits you very well. But between us, how much did you pay for them? I need a pair as well. Yes, I’m going to Seychelles this summer, can hardly wait.

You have no necklace, good choice. With the hot weather, it is a no-no situtation accesorizing up, I know.

Maybe you can open up a few more buttons, it’s quite hot here. But suit yourself, if you don’t want to, it’s fine.

I like your belt, it’s Dolce&Gabbana, I saw it on a celebrity magazine the other day. Why won’t you tell me how much it costs… Come on!

Ah the bag to die for… That’s where you hid your shoes, isn’t it? Cool, I’m gonna go get them, you look almighty fine with the sandals anyways… What was your name again?

Fat Gold’s Daft Punk homage t-shirt

July 24th, 2011

I can imagine someone getting a bit over-excited about this shirt and running through Mintees-town screaming Rip! Rip! Manticores assemble! (not that Im saying Mintees is over-reactionary like that, its just that a lot of ripoffs are discovered and discussed there), but Im fairly sure that in this case it can be called an homage to the iconic Daft Punk logo.

Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2011: Christian Dior without John Galliano

July 18th, 2011

After 15 years of John Galliano at the reins, Christian Diors first Haute Couture show without him was dramatically different. The much anticipated collection drew the likes of Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee, Russian model Natalia Vodianova and half of Paris with streets being closed off around the Musée Rodin. With Bill Gaytten as creative director (Gallianos assistant for 23 years) the show had a distinctly 80s vibe to it with pastel prints teamed with bright head pieces and architectural shapes.

The collection started with colour blocked pastels, drifting to brightly coloured gowns in red, yellow, blue and green, some structured with ruffles and others more fluid and almost of a kaftan style.

Next were the ball gowns, with roses as the main inspiration fitting in nicely with the venue the rose garden at the Musee Rodin. The gowns were stunning: full multi-layered tafetta skirts with fan-like embelishments, mimicking the petals of a rose in simple white. For the finale, Karlie Kloss closed the show dressed as Pierrot the clown.

Of the collection Gaytten said I wanted this collection to be very modern.

However, will this drastic depart from previous collections sell? What do you think?
