Guide to Formal Silver Ties

May 13th, 2011

Most men consider black and white the most popular necktie color. For a reason we speak of a black tie attire and white tie dress code. While black and white are the most formal bow tie colors, neck ties can add formality in several other color shades. One of the overlooked formal necktie colors is silver. Below is a guide on how to wear, and how to match the silver necktie. In addition we feature three popular silver ties and give you ideas on how to dress each tie up or down.

The Solid Silver Tie
Without doubt, the solid color tie made from a smooth and shiny silk is the most formal design and pattern (or non-pattern). This solid silver silk tie will be a perfect choice for a classic formal or semi-formal dress code. It will be a perfect accessory for a “black tie optional” dress code in combination with white dress shirt, black or charcoal suit, and a matching silver handkerchief. We also suggest that this tie is knotted with a slightly asymmetric Four in Hand knot.

Add More Texture
If solid color ties are too plain for you then we suggest you have a look at this light silver tie with fine cross-pattern. The pattern is woven into the fabric and adds a nice texture to the fabric. Besides having a different texture the weave adds a unique sheen to the tie. It appears to be solid in plain in color but a closer look actually shows the intricate fabric weave. This tie suits formal as well as semi-formal dress codes.

Formal Silver Tie with Stripes
Who says that striped ties are meant for business? This solid color striped tie is one of our most formal striped neckties. It is made from a single color yarn and the striped pattern is created by switching the yarn’s weaving direction. If you are looking to add some pattern to your formal or semi-formal attire then this silver tie is for you. For more information as well as a bigger picture, please click on the image on the left.

Sport Coat and Blazer Jacket Guide

May 7th, 2011

Blazers don’t have a very good public rep. They’re often seen as stuffy, boring pieces that should only be worn when going to formal events and hosting game shows. Men’s fashion today, however, offers you quite a few options in the blazer department, with quite a few that are more than appropriate for non-formal situations. Even when you don’t plan to wear a necktie, there are still ways to score style points with a blazer.

The Casual Blazer
It sounds like an oxymoron, the casual blazer, but it’s a combination that’s easy to do in real life and is quite a versatile and memorable outfit. Aside from the blazer itself, the rest of the ingredients should be easy to find, right in your own closet.

The simplest and quickest combination is add a blazer over a solid (preferably light) tee and dark jeans. The resulting look is sophisticated without being stuffy, yet casual that doesn’t look sloppy. If you want to dress up your outfit just a teeny bit more, wear a polo shirt instead of the tee. It’s a little preppier and dressier, but maintains that laid back and relaxed vibe of the ‘casual’ blazer.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a new blazer just to pull off this look. Although it’s a good idea to get your wardrobe a sport coat specifically for the purpose, this kind of outfit is just as doable with the blazer from your gray or navy office suit.

The Quirky Blazer
It’s true that blazers are formal pieces that carry a lot of fashion tradition with them. It’s not true that blazers have to be boring and completely devoid of personality.

For spring, the quirky blazer is the one that you wear with a slim shirt, no necktie and a pair of slim tailored shorts. Yes, you read that right: shorts. As long as the shorts are of the dressy variety (the fabric feels like the stuff in your office slacks), it’s a casual take on a formal combination of fabrics. Skipping the necktie is standard to maintain the casual feel, but you can throw in a patterned bow tie for extra quirky style points.

Remember that this kind of outfit is playing on the standards of formal fashion, so the rest of your ensemble should be consistent with that. Little details like leather shoes (a pair of loafers or drivers work great) and a nice watch help achieve the desired effect.

The Double Breasted Blazer
Although they’ve been quite the trend for a while, DBs are still as hot a style item today as they were when they first rolled out on the runways. No, they’re not limited to just the high fashion crowd. Yes, there are many ways to wear the DB blazer.

The stereotypical way of wearing the double breasted blazer is also the most formal. It involves fully buttoning up, a crisp shirt and a well-done necktie. Nowadays, though, it’s just as sharp to wear your DB with less dressy items like a tee or cardigan. You can leave it open and even go the whole nine casual yards by pushing up the sleeves.

Blazers add a touch of dressiness and tradition to your outfit, but they’re a far cry from the one-trick style ponies that many think they are. Once you broaden your fashion horizons a bit, you’ll see that there’s much more to the blazer than meets the eye.

Ideas for Mother’s Day 2011

May 3rd, 2011

Mark your calendars – May 8th, 2011 is Mother’s Day. And don’t forget, Mom is betting on whether you are going to forget or not. Hedge your bets and follow our simple guide to making Mom feel extra special on Mom’s Day.

First and foremost, get flowers. Flowers are the quintessential marker for thoughtfulness and beauty. Every mom has a favorite blossom. You can go bright and bold with a bouquet of roses or deliver simple sophistication in the form of white lilies. No matter what bouquet you choose, your mom is sure to blush with pride. We suggest a dozen roses in an assortment of pinks.

Next on the checklist is brunch. Whether you decide to get creative and cook or make reservations, make sure she is pampered. Every mom deserves a kitchen free day. Put on an apron, pour a round of mimosas and make mom a simple breakfast. This is the one day, you can’t go wrong in the kitchen. Anything you make, burned or not, will be much appreciated. But if in doubt about your cooking skills, we suggest making a batch of scrambled eggs, toast and a bowl of mixed berries.

And most importantly, impress Mom by doing all this in your best dressed spring ensemble. Break out your favorite lightweight button up shirt, roll up the sleeves and pair it with a patterned tie. We suggest you crank up the colors and the mood with the ties pictured below. Ties are a surefire way to add class, color and style to any outfit. I’ll be wearing a white dress shirt, navy linen pants and a light blue paisley print tie.

Follow the three cardinal rules (flowers, brunch and ties) and you’re sure to make Mom feel special and loved. We know that sometimes planning holidays can be daunting. Don’t let it be. The aim of the game is to make your mom feel appreciated and proud. You’re the apple of her eye so dress the part for the day and give her the royal treatment.

Is Paolo your next summer fling?

No.612 in a limited series – Or the husband-to-be? He has a house in Como Lake and a lovely yacht. What does he look for in a girlfriend?

Paolo’s very particular. I mean, I met him last summer as I was enjoying my holiday in Portofino with my girlfriend. He was very laid-back, cool and easy to talk to. He seemed like a decent guy to us. As he was in the city for work that day, he was feeling lonely so we invited him out for dinner.

We still remember all the details of his outfit. Sportive linen jacket, poplin shirt, nice cotton shorts, chic belt, woven shoes without any lace… It was a to-die-for outfit with the sun shining like never before in the background and the Portofino sky as blue as a perfect sapphire.

He never took off his glasses though, it seemed like he wanted to keep his mysterious attitude. I admit that it was kind of awkward to dine with him in a restaurant where he would refuse not to take his shades off.

As we were talking, he seemed quite interested in how wonderful a couple we were so he asked: ‘I’m a very good guy, I have a house in Como Lake and a lovely yacht. I love sailing, fishing, dancing on the beach… I hate one night stands and I hope to settle down with a perfect someone as soon as possible because I am quite bored of searching… Don’t you have any friends to introduce me to?’

We were like… Um… You know, in an awkard silence. I mean we barely knew the guy. Ok he met the requirements of many girls in the world: chic outfit, nice hairdo, lots of money, cool attitude, friendly personality and so on… Yet introducing a stranger to a close friend… No, not really our cup of tea.

So, working for Dolce&Gabbana, I said maybe I could introduce him to YOU, Swide Readers to see if there’s anyone interested in meeting him.

Who knows what kind of presents that might be waiting for you in his chic weekend bag?

We loved his shoes as well. He changed them for the night. It was very special, like made of the material of these big rice bags, you know what I mean? Next morning, I went to the Dolce&Gabbana to get everything he had on and met these price tags. Let me introduce them to you:

Jacket: 1245 Euro, Poplin Shirt: 195 Euro, Shorts: 355 Euro, Belt: 215 Euro, First Pair of Shoes: 335 Euro…

Mens Athletic Fashion

April 11th, 2011

Sweat is an inevitable part of sport, which isn’t exactly good news when you’re trying to look good. Few things can match sweat when it comes to dampening – aesthetically and literally – a stylish outfit. There is, however, a way to reconcile men’s fashion and men’s needs to get sweaty. All it takes is a little tweaking here and there to add some style to a look that places comfort and practicality first.

You might not have to wear a necktie and leather shoes to the gym, but looking good in the weights room also requires slightly more effort than throwing on the first tee and pair of shorts you find. Thinking about your outfit is an absolute must if looking sharp in the weights room is so important to you.

Concentrate! Coordinate!
One of the main reasons why gym outfits tend to turn heinous is that too few of them are properly coordinated. The end result is typically a pairing that looks blah at best, a very nondescript tee with a pair of shorts that’s just as unmemorable.

Neck ties always go great with oxford shirts. Sneakers with jeans will never go out of style. These combinations are very reliable because they’re coordinated in the sense that they have the same level of formality and a very similar ‘feel’ with each other. There’s no concrete, hard and fast rule to identify arrangements like these, but you can make finding them a lot easier on yourself.

Colors are a great place to start coordinating your outfits – for sports and other pursuits – especially if you buy from more than one brand. It’s a quick way to put together an outfit that’s cohesive and aesthetically pleasant without being brand-conscious.

Matching isn’t the only way to coordinate multiple articles of clothing. You’ll look just as good when you wear complementary or contrasting colors with each other, or a single bright and eye-catching hue paired with other more muted pieces. Do you remember all the rules you use to match neckties to office shirts? If you do, then you already have a very handy guide to matching different pieces of sportswear with each other.

Size Matters
At least, it does when you get the right size. Men’s fashion is all about fit, and the sports style niche is no exception. Although you might be getting slightly looser clothes to give you greater range of movement, hitting the gym is no reason to wear baggy garments.

The first place to check when looking at fit is the shoulder area. Whether you’re fitting a three-piece suit or a track suit, shoulder width is one of the most crucial measurements in the book. If it doesn’t fit at the shoulders, you may as well find yourself a different set of clothes. It’s too unsightly to wear and too expensive to have repaired.

Big, baggy shorts and pants aren’t a very good idea either, especially if you’ll just be in the weights room anyway. A few sports like football and running require special kinds of shorts because of the movements involved. For regular workouts, though, a pair of shorts that don’t balloon should be on your shopping list. Men most commonly err here, if the number of guys wearing pantaloon-sized jogging pants in the gym is any indication.

The truly fashion-conscious will see every situation – including sweaty workouts – as an equally good opportunity to practice upstanding style. It’s a simple matter, really, if you would only spend time to buy the appropriate pieces of clothing
