The Fastest Ways To Become A Famous Model

This Week’s Hottest Stories

August 25th, 2011

All the biggest stories from our week in fashion, style and beauty coverage…

Nearly six months have elapsed since Christian Dior lost its designer, and this week, a new name entered the Galliano-replacement ring: Marc Jacobs. It’s thought that Jacobs, who leads Louis Vuitton along with his own labels, would be an attractive brand-builder to Dior bosses. But will there be polka dots?

Beyond the Jacobs buzz, fashion TV developments and left-field brand collaborations punctuated the week. First up was more news about Alexa Chung’s Project Runway-esque reality show—but where things really got ‘OMG that makes so much sense!’ exciting was when we learned that Lady Gaga will guest-star on The Simpsons. (Do you think Marge was threatened by Gaga’s teal hair funnel during filming? Diva-off…)

On the collaborations front, Missoni announced that it would design the interiors of a condominium development in—of all places—Manila. And World: you’re going to get a chance to meet Fendi’s high-fashion Maserati.

We were also treated to a couple of premieres. The much-anticipated One Day opened on UK screens. Star Anne Hathaway wore Alexander McQueen Resort 2012 to the London premiere. Florence and the Machine, who are probably sick of singing ‘Dog Days’, announced that they’ll release their second album in November and released a preview track from the as-yet-unnamed record.

Since this weekend marks a turning point between the seasons, we brought you a round-up of six of the best brogues for autumn. If you’re more intent on investing in your fitness than your footwear, consider emulating A-listers like Bar Refaeli and Kim Kardashian. Or Olympians—something tells us they know what they’re doing.

We’re off for the long weekend. Not sure how you’d like to spend your three days off? Check out our suggestions for health and last-minute hotels. And, as a little treat, take a moment to watch this video of all Cher Horowitz’s outfits from Clueless. Work on Monday? As IF…

Gallery: Cindy Sherman’s Collaboration With M.A.C. Cosmetics

July 27th, 2011

Chameleon-like artist Cindy Sherman uses various dramatic self-portraits to interact with and comment on society. M.A.C. cosmetics sells makeup to people. According to some academic articles I just Googled up, Shermans work functions seamlessly and successfully within the economic framework of late capitalist society, so its not surprising at all that shed accept an offer to partner with M.A.C. in creating (and modeling) several different color palettes. Here they are.

Alexander McQueen Wills Fortune To Dogs

July 26th, 2011

Late fashion icon Lee Alexander McQueen left $80,000 of his $25 million fortune to his beloved pet dogs.

The Scottish designer was depressed when he committed suicide in Feb. 2010, but he proved his love and devotion to his pooches by putting aside a chunk of his riches to ensure they will be pampered for the rest of their lives. In financial documents made public, McQueens siblings, houskeepers, and charities were also revealed as the benefactors.

Lee’s obeneficiaries include:

• Three sisters and two brothers: $375,000 each
• Two housekeepers: $75,000 each
• Godson, niece and nephews: $75,000 each
• Animal charities (Battersea Dogs Cats Home and The Blue Cross): $150,000 each
• The London Buddhist Centre: $150,000
• The Terrace Higgins Trust (a charity that promotes sexual health and safe sex): $150,000

He left the remainder of his estate in a trust for his own Sarabande charity – which shares a name of his S/S 07 collection – and asked that they consider using this money to fund grants for students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where he studied fashion.

An April inquest revealed that Lee took his own life on Feb. 11, 2010, after a long battle with depression, including pressures from work and his mother’s death. Police found a book at the designer’s London flat with a note: Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee.

The McQueen Fashion House is currently in the hands of head designer Sarah Burton, who designed Princess Catherines royal wedding dress earlier this year.
